Biography of Togyu OKUMURA

Portrait of Togyu OKUMURA1889 - Japanese painter Togyu OKUMURA was born in Tokyo. His true given name was Yoshizo.
1905 - Entered Kajita Hanko Juku, a private painting school, and studied under Kokei KOBAYASHI.
1911 - Worked at the Ministry of Communication for five years.
1920 - Became a pupil of Kokei KOBAYASHI.
1927 - Exhibited his work "Kyuuribatake (Cucumber Field)" at the 14th Inten Exhibition, and awarded his first prize.
1929 - Exhibited his work "Hasuike (Lotus Pond)" at the 16th Inten Exhibition, and became the "Inyu" of the Japan Art Institute.
1932 - Became the "Dojin" of the Japan Art Institute.
1935 - Became a professor of the Department of Japanese-style painting of Imperial Art School (now Musashino Art University).
1936 - Awarded at the first Teiten Exhibition.
1947 - Became a member of the Imperial Art Academy.
1959 - Appointed to the Director of the Japan Art Institute.
1962 - Given the Order of Culture. Designated a Person of Cultural Merit.
1978 - Appointed to the chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Japan Art Institute.
1990 - Togyu OKUMURA passed away at the age of 101.
